  • Caption: “Indiae / Orientalis / Nova Descriptio” is an early to mid-17th century map of Indonesia and South-east Asia by the famous Dutch cartographer Jan Jansson from the very rare 1636 German edition of the atlas Geradi Mercatoris Atlas. It was the most accurate as well as being one of the most elegant 17th century maps of the East Indian Islands and included one of the first inferences to the discoveries made on the northwestern coast of Australia in 1606 by William Jansz in the ship Duyfken. On the south coast of New Guinea the name ‘Duyfkens Eylant’ appears, thereby immortalizing the name of the ship by which Australia had been discovered in 1606. Detail from the exhibition of rare antique maps, prints and books in Bartele Gallery. Jakarta, Indonesia -- 29 March 2010
